pineapple--friend or foe?
I love pineapple--now that I am pregnant. NOT canned pineapple--now that I am pregnant--only fresh pineapple. I bought a little corer and slicer for the pineapple thing, because I wanted it to be really as fresh as I could get it.
Since being pregnant, I have maybe gone 3-4 days at the most without pineapple. It's so sweet, and so delicious, and smells so wonderful, and tastes so fantastic--it must be very high in sugar, and therefore very high in calories.
So, therefore, how bad is it that I just ate an entire pineapple in one sitting? I don't even feel that satisfied--I just feel like I desperately want/need more pineapple.
It was so great. *sigh*. Will have to go to the grocery store and get more soon.

i think it's a pretty reasonable craving to indulge. it's probably got fiber and stuff... it definitely has digestive enzymes (papyin or some such thing) that make you feel better, more at ease... you know. i read an article yesterday about "truth of the delivery room..." it cracked me up, and i wanted to copy/post the whole thing to my blog. but i think everyone else would just barf. nothing scary though- just that things are messy, and people have to touch you a lot.
Other people probably would barf! I looked into the pineapple thing, and it looks like it's not too bad--I actually couldn't find anything bad about indulging in that. The calories are low-only 76 per cup of fresh pineapple, and there were lots and lots of benefits.
Thank goodness. I want more.
Hehe. That's funny. I can only eat about a 1/4 pineapple at a time - it hurts my tongue!
I guess eating a whole pineapple is better than eating a whole quart of ice cream:)
Last night, I learned in hypnobirthing class that we should talk to the baby more, and rub my stomach all the time because the baby can feel it and he likes it:) Isn't that weird??
I set up the crib the other day, and I took picks. I am going to try and post them later. The chamois lambie stuff looks so good on the crib!!
I loves the pineapple - just can't right now.
I would recommend making a pina colada (sans alcohol of course - or a pinada, as they called it in Puerto Vallarta); having it really slushy and drinking it from the pineapple. SOOOO good. That's how we got it at a luau in Hawaii on our honeymoon.
I still dream of that pina colada.
So my mom tells me that when was pregnant with me she had extreme cravings for watermelon and beef tripe cooked chinese style. At the same time. Which was nearly impossible to get about 30 years ago in Michigan. During the middle of the winter.
She also says that according to Chinese medicine, pregnant women shouldn't eat too much pineapple. Something about pineapple being "fire" and you don't want the baby to have too much "fire." Unless you yourself have a lot of "water" in which that wouldn't be a problem. Of course, there's no medical basis for this, and I wouldn't believe her, but she wanted me to pass it along to you so here it is! Feel free to ignore it. :)
What's bad about the baby having too much 'fire'? And how do I know if I have a lot of 'water'?
How interesting.
Well, I THINK it's because a person ideally should be balanced in terms of the "elements" - like fire, water, wood, and uh...air? I have no idea. I'll have to ask my mom. So according to Chinese medicine, a person with too much fire has a fiery personality and is prone to things like heat rashes, canker sores, pimples - which are all seen as signs of too much fire. The normal prescription for an ailment that is a result of too much fire is like a "water" thing, which puts out the fire. Watermelon, and tofu are examples of cooling foods.
But then my mom thought you must have a fair amount of "water" if you can eat whole pineapples without hurting your tongue and mouth. So maybe it all balances out.
I don't know. All mumbo jumbo to me. :)
I drink a lot of water, maybe that helps:)
I was ust wondering. I actually read your comment, wrote my own, went to lunch and ate a half of a pineapple, and now came back. I thought about adding more fire to the baby while I was eating the pineapple, but it was so delicious...
I don't know about the hurting my mouth thing. Before I got pregnant, I didn't eat so much pineapple because it did make my lips and tongue all kinda tingly. But now, I don't feel any of the tingling--I just feel the wish for more pineapple. Isn't that funny?
I thought I did have a lot of fire though, because I am an aries. Isn't that a fire sign?
Although, in chinese zodiac (according to chinese restaurant placemats) I am a horse. But you know that, because you must be a horse too. Anyhow, do horses have anything to do with the fire water air thing?
Haha. I have no idea. My mom reads your blog sometimes - maybe I can get her to post and clarify!!
That's awesome:) I actually read a bit online yesterday about chinese astrology, but I couldn't find anything about the air, water fire thing.
At least not anything good.
You know, I googled "pineapple and pregnant" and apparently people post about it a lot b/c pineapple, like papaya, is believed to be a labor inducer in Eastern medicine.
also, I found this link that seems to explain the chinese medicine aspect of it.
